AmeriCorps State & National
The AmeriCorps State & National program received $89 million in Recovery Act funding to engage AmeriCorps members in service to meet needs of economically distressed individuals and communities. In May 2009, the Corporation awarded grants and cooperative agreements totaling nearly $87 million to 130 state service commissions, national direct grantees, and technical assistance providers that supported 10,677 new member positions and provided waivers from matching fund requirements.
The Recovery Act funded AmeriCorps members are meeting critical community needs resulting from the current economic crisis. Individuals currently unemployed are gaining work experience and valuable skills, and nonprofit organizations negatively affected by the economic crisis gain critical human resources. Some of the activities being performed by AmeriCorps members include employment and skills training, tutoring and literacy, financial planning, home foreclosures and housing assistance, healthcare access, and volunteer generation and management.
